The Theater District

Boston has always had an active theater, second only to New York in the number of offerings. The large legitimate theaters, primarily the Shubert, The Colonial and The Wilbur, have made professional Broadway plays available as well as touring versions of Broadway hits and pre-Broadway tryouts. Resident theater and performing arts companies play to over 400,000 people a year. In Boston, there is theater for everyone, Black, Hispanic, Gay and Lesbian, Feminist, Improvisational and Experimentational.
