Downtown
A good place to begin to get to know
both old and new Boston is to walk the Freedom Trail which begins
at Boston Common's Tourist Information Booth. At every turn you
will find old landmarks that will take you back to early American
Heritage. Learn the story of the stern puritan fathers residing
beneath the stone angels of death in the Tremont Street Burial
Grounds. Experience 18th Century religious and political dissent
at King's Chapel ( at the corner of Tremont and School Streets),
whose bell was cast by Paul Revere. Browse at the Olde Corner
Bookstore, which displays first editions of America's 19th Century
literary classics. Some of Boston's famous landmarks have been
given new leases on life by imagination and reuse. For example,
Old City Hall now contains offices and a restaurant. Wander the
streets just off the Freedom Trail to see how contemporary Boston
has incorporated its past.
