OAK BLUFFS
Oak Bluffs is a rare jewel. Originally
a Methodist's retreat, this community is home to the Vineyard's
only original architectural style, Camp Ground Gothic Revival.
Oak Bluffs, known as "Cottage City in the late 1800s, Oak
Bluffs was the first of seven resorts on the Island, and it was
the star of the tourist trade, replacing whaling as the Island's
principal industry.
Serving as a port for the ferry, this town is like many festive
port cities. Beautiful pastel cottages line narrow streets. After
a century, the Famous Flying Horse Carousel is still in operation.
Oak Bluffs also provides sweeping views of the coastline. Activities
are varied: boating, sport fishing, shopping, and dining are
all available. Beautiful accommodations ranging from the unpretentious
to the elegant are available. During the off-season, midweek
specials and other discounts provide more time to enjoy the Island!
