GAY HEAD

Known as "Aquinnah" by the Wampanoag tribe, Gay Head is home to the clay head cliffs, a geological record of the earth's million-year evolution. In the midst of the cliffs is the Gay Head Lighthouse, a favorite subject for photographers and artists.

WEST TISBURY

This is a farming community boasting a farmer's market, a scenic swan pond, and a general store. The natives called this place "Takemmy", which loosely translates as "Where anybody goes to grind corn." Artists and poets are drawn to this end of the Island largely due to the bucolic seclusion.

UP ISLAND

The communities of Chilmark, Gay Head, Menemsha, and West Tisbury are all part of what the natives call Up-Island.

CHILMARK

Rolling hills, stone walls, ponds, and farms are the definition of the landscape of Chilmark, the highest elevation of the Vineyard. The stone walls were built by the original settlers to contain sheep and cattle. Its working fishing port is Menemsha.
